Harry Potter DIY Love Potion – Amortentia Heart Shaped Tea Bags with Free Printable

I’m really excited to share with you a fun DIY! These Amortentia Tea Bags will be a great gift for Valentine’s Day or for any other day if you want to surprise someone who loves the Harry Potter saga.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Harry Potter universe, Amortentia is the most powerful love potion there is in the Wizard world. This potion is supposed to smell different to each person depending on what attracts them. I decided to adapt this fun potion concept to tea bags: “love at first sip guaranteed”.

I created 4 different free printable tea bag envelopes to help you recreate these Amortentia Tea Bags. To make this gift more fun and realistic, I made sure to include fun references that true Harry Potter fans will recognize.

You could simply add a regular tea bag in it, but if you’re up to it, I recommend you create your own heart shaped tea bags to get the full “love potion” effect.

I decided to add hibiscus tea inside my tea bags (so that once I add hot water, the liquid turns red) but you can add whichever tea you prefer.

In this tutorial I’ll show you how I created my own heart shaped tea bag with simple supplies, and how to fold the tea bag envelope.

For the occasion, I even created my first tutorial video! Steep learning curve you guys. There clearly is lots of room for improvement in my video making skills (plus, english isn’t my native language) but I hope this will be helpful to you!

Supplies needed to create this Harry Potter DIY – Amortentia Heart Shaped Tea Bags

For this DIY you will need:

  • Printable Tea Bag Envelope (download file towards the bottom of the article)
  • 2 coffee filters
  • Cotton thread (whichever color you like)
  • Needle
  • Your favorite method of adhesive: Glue (this one is really nice for paper crafts), tape runner or double sided tape
  • Scissors
  • Tea: from a tea bag or loose (this tea is a good choice if you want your “love potion” to turn red once water is added)

Instructions

I’ve created a video tutorial for this DIY but here are also some written instructions to guide you through this tutorial.

Tea Bag Envelope

To create the tea bag envelopes, simply download (at the end of this page) my free printable and print it on smooth bright paper. I created 4 different tea bag designs, print whichever you like best.

I decided to print my tea bag envelopes on this matte photo paper to get the best printing quality but on second thought a thinner paper might have been a better choice to make folding easier and get the envelope to look more like a typical tea bag envelope (they’re always made of thin paper).

Cut the different elements: envelopes, heart shaped tea bag template and 3 small hearts per envelope.each envelope.

Fold along the light grey lines and add adhesive on the side flaps in order to form your envelope.

Add one of the 3 little hearts on the back opening of the envelope in order to create a love letter look. The two remaining hearts will be used to create a matching tea bag tag.

Heart Shaped Tea Bag

To create your actual tea bag you’ll need two coffee filters. Use the heart shaped template to cut a heart into both of your coffee filters. We’re now going to sew these hearts together to form your tea bag.

I used a blanket stitch but you can use a different type of stitch. Just try to keep your stitches as tight as possible to avoid spillage of loose tea.

When you’ve sewn about three quarter of the heart, add your loose tea in your tea bag. To make it easier to empty my loose tea inside my heart tea bag, I made a little funnel out of paper and washi tape (see video).

Once your tea is added, you can then finish sewing your heart together. Leave some thread and attach the two remaining hearts to your thread to create the tea bag tag.

Tadaaa! Congratulate yourself, add this cute tea bag in your Amortentia envelope and get ready to make someone happy!

I hope you liked this Harry potter DIY gift! Feel free to leave me your questions in comment if you have any!
