To make it a breeze for you and your little ones to create this planter, I created a free printable with labels that fit 3″ and 4″ tin cans. This DIY is a fun way to upcycle empty food cans and share a cute message and a pretty plant!

Extra Tips to create this Easy DIY Planter

To fit most food cans, I’ve created 2 sizes of labels: 3″x11″ and 4″x10″. Measure your can before starting this DIY and print the file you need accordingly.

You can choose between 2 messages for the labels: “Thanks for helping me grow” or “Thank you for helping me grow”. Both designs are identical, minimalist & printer-friendly. Here’s a low res preview of the 3×11″ labels:

You can print these labels on any type of paper you’d like (white, kraft paper, colored paper…).

The edges of your metal can cut can be sharp so be careful not to cut yourself when adding your plant inside the can.

Some mini plant plastic pots fit exactly the diameter of aluminum cans. That’s ideal and it makes it easier to add your plant inside your planter. The plastic pot can then easily be removed to water your plant for example. It’s better for the plant as it will ensure proper drainage.  In my case, I used an 8cm/about 3″ wide plastic pot to fit inside a 3″ high can and it was a great fit. I’ve had this planter for a few weeks now, with a plastic planter inside my tin can and it still looks as great as the first day.

If you can’t find a mini plant pot that fits the diameter of your tin can, don’t worry. You can pierce a few holes at the bottom of your can, add rocks at the bottom of the can and then add your soil and plant your plant.
